Many filters use a medium that captures, absorbs, or changes the pollutants in the water that passes through it. Different filters use different methods to clean out the water. There are several kinds of filters: activated carbon, sediment, reverse osmosis, and ceramic filters.
- Activated carbon filters use organic materials like coal and wood to capture contaminants as the water passes through it.
- Sediment filters use a fine sieve that reduces the amount of dirt and other particles in the water.
- Reverse osmosis filters work by allowing water molecules to pass through an ultra-thin membrane that captures the larger particulate matter. This is sometimes used in conjunction with activated carbon filters.
- Ceramic filters are great in cleaning out water of sediments and harmful bacteria. They can also be easily cleaned by simply taking out the ceramic piece and taking a soft brush to it.
